BJJ Hygiene Checklist (Simple Routine That Sticks)

Clean habits = more rolling and fewer skin issues. This is the simple routine I give beginners: two minutes before class, five minutes after, plus basic gear care. Keep it boring and consistent.

Before Class (2-Minute Prep)

  • Trim nails (hands + feet).
  • Cover cuts with a small bandage + tape.
  • Quick face/neck rinse if you’ve been sweating earlier.
  • Fresh rashguard (dry = less bacteria).

After Class (5-Minute Routine)

  • Shower ASAP (at the gym or as soon as you get home).
  • Soap picks: use a simple, non-irritating antibacterial body wash/bar.
  • Don’t sit in your gi—change shirts at minimum.
  • Flip-flops in locker/shower areas.

Gear Care

  • Wash every use (cold, gentle).
  • No fabric softener (breaks fibers, traps smells).
  • Hang dry inside out; avoid high heat.
  • Bag stink: open and air out; toss in a mesh deodorizer pouch.

Skin Issue Triage

  • Red, circular, or weeping spots? Sit out and clean mats.
  • Itchy clusters or blisters? Stop rolling; get it checked.
  • Share info with your coach—protect the room.

Quick Checklist (printable)

  • Nails trimmed
  • Cuts covered
  • Fresh rashguard
  • Post-class shower
  • Gi/rashguard washed
  • Bag aired out
